Determining Bore Position

When ordering a pre-hung door, D & I Door offers the service of boring and mortising the door for a handle or lockset, referred to as “machining,” at no extra charge. The machining specifications must match the door hardware, so customers need to verify the bore position with their hardware supplier. If the hardware is purchased from D & I Door, the company will ensure proper machining to match the hardware.

Machining Options

  • Single Bore: Typically for interior doors, this includes one bore hole for a handle or lockset.
  • Double Bore: Usually for exterior doors, this includes two bore holes—one for a lockset and another for a deadbolt.

Standard Machining Specifications

  • First Bore Position: 36″ from the bottom of the door.
  • Bore Hole Diameter: 2-1/8″.
  • Double Bore Center-to-Center Distance: 5-1/2″ (from the center of one bore to the center of the other).
  • Available Backsets: 2-3/8″ and 2-3/4″ (distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore diameter).

Sun Mountain’s machining also includes:

  • Mortising the edge of the door for the latch (or both latch and deadbolt for double bore).
  • Mortising the strike on the jamb leg (where the latch or deadbolt inserts).

Illustrations

The following illustrations depict D & I Door’s standard bore positions and backsets for both single and double bore options:

  1. Single Bore:
    • Bore Hole Diameter: 2-1/8″.
    • Bore Position: 36″ from the bottom of the door.
    • Backset: Either 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″.
  2. Double Bore:
    • Bore Hole Diameter: 2-1/8″.
    • First Bore Position: 36″ from the bottom of the door.
    • Distance Between Bore Holes: 5-1/2″ center to center.
    • Backset: Either 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″.

Ensure to match the bore and backset specifications with the hardware requirements for a proper fit and function.
